Driving Sustainability at medmix – Through the Eyes of Markus Preckl

9 April 2026

From Large-Scale Energy Consumption to Smarter, Greener Operations

Markus Preckl 1

At medmix, our sustainability journey is shaped not only by technology and strategy but by the people who champion it every day. One of these leaders is Markus Preckl, who has been part of medmix for more than 22 years - growing, transforming, and ultimately driving sustainability across our large-scale production operations in Haag (Switzerland) and Kiel (Germany).

For Markus, sustainability has always been more than a professional responsibility - it began shaping his worldview long before his career started. As a child, he was deeply moved by global campaigns highlighting the threat of extinction faced by the giant panda. Around the same time, he had a teacher who instilled in him a strong appreciation for nature and the importance of protecting it.

These early impressions stayed with him, and they resurfaced strongly years later as he witnessed the rapid retreat of glaciers in his home country of Switzerland. Seeing this change in the landscape he loves reinforced his belief that everyone carries a shared responsibility for preserving the planet.

This lifelong awareness now influences how he leads the Haag site, guiding decisions that care about responsible resource use, energy efficiency, and long-term environmental stewardship.

What Responsible Production Means to Him

In large‑scale manufacturing, sustainability is not just an aspiration - it’s a duty. Markus sees responsible production as something every employee directly shapes.

Responsible production, for him, starts with awareness: understanding that every material, every kilowatt-hour of energy, and every process step carries weight. Waste is not just a cost factor; it’s an environmental burden. That’s why he emphasizes humility in how resources are used; they are limited gifts from the planet and have to be approached with the respect they deserve. In doing so, we honor these natural resources and contribute to a healthier future.

This mindset has become deeply rooted across medmix teams: from engineering to production to logistics. Today, sustainability shows up in daily decisions, not just annual reports.

Turning Awareness into Action Across medmix

medmix has built a comprehensive approach to sustainability, reflected across several strategic pillars:

  • Scope 1–3 Emissions: We actively reduce emissions across the value chain, taking a holistic approach to sustainability.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Regular audits and visits from environmental authorities help us ensure we meet and exceed legislation requirements for large-scale energy consumers.
  • Transparent Reporting: Through KPIs, tracking, and defined actions, we monitor our progress and make sustainability measurable.
  • Training & Awareness: Preventive training empowers our employees to embed sustainability and safety in their daily work.

Sustainability has become part of the collective mindset, not only in engineering and production but also in product design, supplier interactions, and warehouse operations. The awareness extends beyond the factory walls, influencing how many employees behave in their personal lives as well.

Energy & Efficiency in Operations

  • Solar Power – Almost 100% of our photovoltaic energy is used in-house, generating around 10% of our total yearly consumption from renewable sources.
  • Energy Efficiency - We continuously modernize our machinery and production sites, improving efficiency and lowering energy demand.
  • Building Improvement - Regular investments in infrastructure - from better roofs to high-performance windows - support energy savings.

Beyond these measures, Markus and his team have introduced additional steps that bring Haag closer to operating nearly fossil‑free. Soon, less than 1% of the site’s total energy consumption will rely on fossil sources. This has been achieved by:

  • Using groundwater for cooling during production
  • Recovering process heat to warm the building
  • Installing photovoltaic systems across all roofs
  • Converting all lighting to LED
  • Sourcing purchased electricity exclusively from renewable providers
  • Installing heat pumps

These investments not only reduce emissions - they make Haag more resilient, efficient, and future-ready.

Looking Ahead

Our long-term vision is clear: a future free from fossil fuel use.

Reaching zero Scope 1 CO₂ emissions, continuing to reduce Scope 2 and 3 emissions, and becoming a flagship site that demonstrates what responsible manufacturing can look like in the medical, dental, and consumer industries.

It’s a vision built not only on technology but on people: people who care, who question, and who act.

Sustainability isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. We’re proud to take meaningful steps today to shape a better, more responsible, tomorrow.
